Parent and Family Information about Student Health Services

University of New Haven and Hartford HealthCare

Student Health Services is open to all university students. We provide care for illness and injuries as well as diagnosis, referral, and follow-up care for more serious conditions. The office is staffed by Hartford HealthCare clinical staff that will help navigate your students through their hybrid visits and coordinate care to any primary, specialty or higher level care needed. We also have online scheduling and access to 24/7 virtual care appointments for students as well as our Hartford HealthCare partner GoHealth down the street on the ground floor of Park View.

  • Please note that if your student is 18 years of age or older he/she will have the authority to release their own medical information. We will be unable to share with you any information regarding a student unless the student has consented to such.

    • Remember to keep a copy for your own records of any forms sent in to the University
    • Remember, all prescription medication must be in its original pharmacy container and properly labeled.
    • We also recommend that a personal First Aid box be made up and brought with the student to school. The following are suggested items:
      • Digital thermometer
      • Band-Aids
      • Gauze pads
      • Peroxide
      • Reusable ice packs
      • Antibiotics ointment (bacitracin)
      • Cold medication (Sudafed)
      • Cough drops/lozenges
      • Cough syrup
      • Tylenol or Advil
      • Pepto-Bismol
      • Purell or other antibacterial gel
    • It is essential that students who have long term chronic illnesses (such as diabetes, seizure disorder, hypertension, and etc.) contact Health Services. Please make sure that we have information concerning that illness, and if student has a specialist that doctors contact information.
    • All full-time students are required to have a completed Physical Form (forms are sent by Âé¶¹´«Ã½ Office after attendance deposit is received). The form must be returned by deadline date provided by the Âé¶¹´«Ã½ Office. Please contact the Âé¶¹´«Ã½ Office if these forms have not been received.
    • All students need to be up to date on all immunizations required by Connecticut state law (2 measles, 1 rubella, and 2 mumps) (Two valid doses of MMR will fulfill the requirement).
    • All students need to show proof of Varicella (Chicken Pox). (History of disease with date, or two doses of the Varicella vaccine).
    • A titre (blood test) can also be completed to show required proof of immunity for measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella. Lab results need to be sent in to Health Services, not just reported titre dates.
    • All residential students are required to have the meningitis vaccine. The vaccine is valid for five years from injection date. If longer than five years, a booster shot will be needed.
    • All athletes, whether living on or off campus, are required to have the meningitis vaccine
  • Billing & Insurance

    • While Hartford HealthCare accepts most insurances, it does not accept all insurances. It is the responsibility of the student to contact their carrier and ask if HHC MG Specialty is in-network.
      • You will need to provide the carrier with our Tax ID Number: 37-1911194.

    • Student Health Services will need a copy of the student’s insurance card each time they arrive for an appointment. Appointments will be billed to the insurance on file.
      • If your insurance changes during the Academic Year, it is the student’s responsibility to notify Student Health Services and present a copy of the new insurance card.
    • If a bill is received for an appointment at SHS and there are questions, call 1-877-HHC-BILL (1-877-442-2455).
      • Please make sure you have connected with the Billing department prior to reaching out to Student Health Services. Our office is unable to adjust bills or establish payment plans.
    • If your insurance requires a copay for a visit, SHS will also require a copay. Copays are paid via MyChartPlus.
    • Insurance Terms
      • Co-Insurance: A type of cost sharing where the beneficiary and insurance provider share payment of the approved charge for covered services in a specified ratio after payment of the deductible by the insured. For example, the insurance company agrees to pay 80% of covered charges and the individual picks up 20%.
      • Co-Payment: A set fee the member pays to providers at the time services are provided. Co-pays are applied to emergency room visits, hospital admissions, office visits, etc. The cost is usually minimal. The patient should be aware of the co-payment amounts prior to services being rendered.
      • Deductible: A portion of the covered expenses (typically $100, $200 or $500) that an insured individual must pay before insurance coverage with co-insurance goes into effect. Deductibles are standard in many policies, and are usually based on a calendar year.
      • Out of Network (OON): Coverage for treatment obtained from a non-participating provider. Typically, it requires payment of a deductible and higher co-payments and co-insurance than for treatment from a participating provider. Insurer may also deny entire bill.
